What role do peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) play in regenerative medicine?
Mononuclear cells circulating in peripheral blood are usually involved in the regenerative and reparative processes taking place in the body tissues. Despite being derived from peripheral blood, just like platelet-rich plasma (PRP), these cells have a remarkable regenerative potential: when necessary, they can indeed differentiate into specific cell types, thus building new tissues that will replace the ones that were damages by ageing and/or traumas.

The technology that isolates mononuclear cells from the rest of the blood has been just recently introduced. It uses a selective peripheral blood filtration system which retains cells according to their electrical charge (membrane potential).
What makes this system unique is its ability to prevent contamination by highly inflammatory cells and to only select the ones with a strong regenerative potential.
Duration of the procedure
The procedure is quite short and takes about 20 minutes. The measures to be taken during rehabilitation depend on whether the procedure was carried out during surgery or by infiltration in an outpatient clinic. While in the first case the rehabilitation is influenced by the kind of surgery performed, in the latter one no special precautions are needed except the application of ice on the relevant joint.
About the procedure
A blood sample (60-120 cc) is taken from the patient and inserted into the test kit. The blood flows through a filter which retains specific cells, which can then be collected and used.
